New Exhibits at the Hunter Museum of American Art

The Hunter Museum of American Art is an incredible space.  The building itself, depicted in the picture above, is perched on an 80-foot limestone bluff above the Tennessee River.  It offers exceptional views of the river and surrounding mountains, but this view is perhaps minimized by the incredible art that awaits inside.  The Hunter Museum of American Art houses what is considered to be one of the best collections in the country, featuring works from the Colonial Period through present times. The exhibits inside feature a variety of artistic mediums, including paintings, works on paper, sculpture, photography, mixed media, furniture and contemporary studio glass.  In addition to the permanent collections, current exhibits at the museum include:

• The Artistic Excursions exhibit features John Henry Twachtman’s painting, Venice, Campo Santa Marta, which was gifted to the museum by his grandniece, Chattanooga resident Nancy K. Anderson. Twachtman has long been considered a leader of American Impressionism, and painted this incredible example circa 1878.
• Thrill After Thrill:  30 Years of Wayne White, on view until December 31, 2017, is an incredible exploration of artist Wayne White.  White, whose work for Pee Wee’s Playhouse earned him three Emmys, offers an artistic adventure for all ages.
• With Liberty and Justice For All is a celebration of both art and politics from the turbulent 1970’s. In this exhibit, artists offer their take on the meaning of independence and American citizenship.

In addition to housing a spectacular array of American Art, the Hunter Museum also hosts several interesting events throughout the year.
