A Beer Lover’s Guide to Best Breweries in Chattanooga
December 21, 2020
When you’re powering up that black diamond trail, returning from a long hike, or taking a breather from a day full of shopping, nothing sounds better than a cold crisp Chattanooga brew. Luckily, Chattanooga boasts numerous breweries, each with their own unique tastes. Whether you like hoppy IPAs, dark and creamy stouts, or smooth and sippable pilsners, you'll find your next favorite brewery here in Chattanooga.
Long, long, long before craft brewing took over the nation your grandparents (and likely great grandparents) were drinking Chattanooga Brewing Company beers. The original Chattanooga Brewing Company started in 1890 and created one of the most iconic buildings in Chattanooga as well as the finest German-style beer in the country. All was well until Prohibition closed down the brewery. Today, the Chattanooga Brewing Company has been revitalized by two beer-loving engineers who decided to bring back the name and art of Chattanooga’s original brewery.
OddStory Brewing was named after the odd story of Chattanooga. The city you see now was built upon the old city that was a frequent victim to floods and erosion. Just like the city, each and every beer that comes out of OddStory has depth and a story. The taproom looks almost jungle-like with plants taking over the walls. You’ll find leather couches, warm lighting, and everything needed to share stories about life, beer, and everything in between.
Named after the fathers of modern geology, Hutton & Smith Brewing Company is a quaint little brewery with rock-themed beers, a cozy taproom, and more geology puns than you can handle. Head into the taproom when you’re looking for a cozy space to nestle into. You can also pick up a pack of cans to-go and enjoy while bouldering, hiking, or paddle boarding down the river.
Tucked inside one of the oldest buildings in Chattanooga, Naked River Brewing is a sight to behold. Rich with natural light, old world details, and Texas style BBQ is just the start of what makes this brewery so special. Stop by for lunch, take your food and canned beer to-go to enjoy on the waterfront, or swing by after a Chattanooga Mocs game at the adjacent Finley Stadium.
One of the newest breweries in the area is taking Chattanooga by storm. Five Wits Brewing Company which opened in late 2019 was started by a couple of friends who met while working for Great Divide Brewing in Denver, Colorado. Missing home and wanting to create their own unique flavor, they decided to open up this colorful craft brewery to reflect the tastes of the region.
