Outside magazine, America’s leading active-lifestyle publication, has selected Chattanooga, TN as the winner in its search to determine the best Outside town in America, following a three week competition held on Facebook.

Outside scoured the nation to find dream cities that offered a balance of great culture, perfect scenery, stress-free and reasonable cost of living, and, of course, easy access to the outdoors. Chattanooga came out on top, receiving the official honor of Outside’s “Best Towns Ever” and is featured on the October 2011 magazine cover which hits newsstands TODAY and Outside Online. Chattanooga will be also be featured in an exclusive segment on Outside Television.

Chattanooga was selected from a list of ten finalists, and competed for the top honor againstCharleston, SC; Madison, WI; Portland, OR; Portland, ME; Santa Fe, NM; Ashland, OR;Boulder, CO; Burlington, VT; Tucson, AZ.

“Putting this issue together is always a tough process when choosing between a number of truly great places. This year we tried something new and allowed the Outside community to help us in the decision making process,” said Outside Editor Chris Keyes. “In addition to possessing all of the great qualities that we look for in determining the quality of life, Chattanooga was a town that everyone rallied to support.”

In addition to featuring the “Best Town Ever” and the towns selected as finalists, Outside’s October 2011 issue highlights a number of cities classified as the “next-big-things,” including: Issaquah, WA; Missoula, MT; Wilmington, NC; Durango, CO; Traverse City, MI; Flagstaff, AZ; Chico, CA;Hardwick, VT and Ithaca, NY.

New Deer Park at Rock City Gardens, Lookout Mountain

April 26th, 2011 by avelient

New Deer Park at Rock City Gardens in Partnership with Amicalola Deer Park
Rock City Gardens has now completed its new Deer Park providing a new improved natural habitat for its White Fallow Deer, along with the new Fallow Deer that arrived from Amicalola baby deer expected to be born in June. Rock City anticipates the arrival of additional deer soon, aiding their goal to repopulate this diminishing breed of deer to this area.

White Fallow Deer are rare, appearing only in one out of every 10,000 Fallow Deer. These deer are able to live off their new natural habitat at Rock City, however additional food is supplemented, such as one of their favorites, corn. This is one way Rock City can cultivate its environmental stewardship.

“Enhancing and preserving our local place is part of Rock City’s mission as a part of the Green Way Forward Initiatives we are implementing,” said Rock City Director of Operations Jeff Raabe.

Amicalola Deer Park began in 2003 when Rainbow Nation Stepped in to protect and rescue a large herd of exotic deer. This 1200-acre park is located in the foothills of the North Georgia Mountains along the headwaters of the Amicalola River. It serves the needs of 150 rescued animals, primarily Sika and Fallow Deer, as a place of retreat, restoration, recreation, preservation and conservation. For more information on all they have to offer, please contact: The Chanticleer Inn Bed & Breakfast, Lookout Mountain. directly across the street from Rock City Gardens, 10 minutes from downtown Chattanooga and a mountain top away. www.stayatchanticleer.com

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN INCLINE RAILWAY RE-OPENS
Improvements made to ensure safety
The Lookout Mountain Incline Railway was closed in December 2010 for repairs and is now reopen for business. The Incline Railway was given an “a-okay” by head engineers from the United States Department of Transportation. The repairs cost an estimated $600,000 on what has been known as “America’s Most Amazing Mile.”
“We worked with contractors from American Track Generations of Fort Worth, Texas the past two months and they have done wonderful work on the Incline. Based on their track maintenance experience and our dedicated Incline team’s efforts, we are thrilled to be finished within budget and weeks ahead of schedule, despite the inclement weather we have had this winter”, said Matthew Higgins, Incline Railway Manager.  “The cable has been connected, the doors are open and we are ready to welcome all of our Spring Break visitors,” he added.
