Registration
The marathon has sold out, but several charity slots are available through www.RunForMiracles.org (select “Miracle Team”).
The marathon has reached its limit of 700 participants. Regular registration is now closed and there is no wait list. Only charity slots remain.
Finisher’s Medals
In 2007, the race introduced a series of commemorative marathon finisher’s medals. Each year the marathon finisher’s medal features a different state monument located in the battlefield. This year’s commemorative marathon finisher’s medal will feature Pennsylvania.
The Pennsylvania Volunteer Cavalry was recognized as one of the most respected in the Civil War. In September, 1863, the Seventh Pennsylvania Volunteer Cavalry is credited with opening and closing the Battle of Chickamauga. The command is noted for its unusual bravery and received praise from the commander of the army and from the commanders of division and brigade.
During the Chickamauga campaign during the late summer of 1863, the Ninth Calvary regiment fought in several skirmishes and captured part of the advance guard of Lt. Gen. James Longstreet’s corps. During the Battle of Chickamauga, it guarded the right flank of the Union arm.
Previous marathon medals featured monuments from the following states:
- Tennessee (2010)
- South Carolina (2009)
- Michigan (2008)
- Georgia (2007)
Race Course
The marathon, which starts and finishes at the 6th Cavalry museum located near the park’s visitor’s center, features two loops in the Chickamauga & Chattanooga National Military Park.
The mostly paved course is challenging but not extraordinarily difficult. Numerous runners have qualified for the Boston Marathon on this course. Results will be provided to the Boston Athletic Assoc. Approximately 23 miles of the double loop portion of the course winds through the historic military park. Traffic is usually light in the park. Sentries will be posted at each major turn and all turns will be marked. Each mile and the half marathon point will be marked.

59th Ohio Regiment at Chickamauga Battlefield

Throughout the weekend, living history volunteers representing the 59th Ohio Infantry will conduct Infantry demonstrations at the Chickamauga Battlefield Visitor Center. Living Historians will present talks about the life of the soldier throughout the weekend on Saturday, from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., and on Sunday, from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. They will also conduct rifle firing demonstrations at 10:30 a.m., 12:00 p.m., 1:00 p.m., 2:30 p.m., and 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, and on Sunday at 10:30 a.m., 12:00 p.m., 1:00 p.m., and 2:30 p.m.. Visitors are encouraged to visit the camp throughout the weekend to learn what life was like on a daily basis for the Civil War soldier. Organized at Ripley, Ohio in October 1861, the 59thOhio Infantry served with the Army of the Ohio/Army of the Cumberland during their service in the Civil War. The regiment participated in the 1862 Battles of Shiloh and Stones River and the 1863 Battle of Chickamauga where it sustained a twenty-seven percent casualty rate. The regiment participated in the Army of the Cumberland’s charge up Missionary Ridge on November 25, 1863. They also fought in the 1864 Atlanta campaign. New Deer Park at Rock City Gardens, Lookout Mountain

New Deer Park at Rock City Gardens in Partnership with Amicalola Deer Park
Rock City Gardens has now completed its new Deer Park providing a new improved natural habitat for its White Fallow Deer, along with the new Fallow Deer that arrived from Amicalola baby deer expected to be born in June. Rock City anticipates the arrival of additional deer soon, aiding their goal to repopulate this diminishing breed of deer to this area.
White Fallow Deer are rare, appearing only in one out of every 10,000 Fallow Deer. These deer are able to live off their new natural habitat at Rock City, however additional food is supplemented, such as one of their favorites, corn. This is one way Rock City can cultivate its environmental stewardship.
“Enhancing and preserving our local place is part of Rock City’s mission as a part of the Green Way Forward Initiatives we are implementing,” said Rock City Director of Operations Jeff Raabe.
Amicalola Deer Park began in 2003 when Rainbow Nation Stepped in to protect and rescue a large herd of exotic deer. This 1200-acre park is located in the foothills of the North Georgia Mountains along the headwaters of the Amicalola River. It serves the needs of 150 rescued animals, primarily Sika and Fallow Deer, as a place of retreat, restoration, recreation, preservation and conservation.
